Cawston Name:-
It is believed the Cawston Name probably originated in the Dark Ages in the 8th and 9th Centuries, the area was settled by Scandinavians who's leading family was called Kalf, hence Kalf Tun.  In the Domesday survey of 1086 our village is called CAUPSTUNA and in later years it became CAUSTON then CAWSTON.

Cooks Hill:- The road named Cooks Hill was originally known as Stocks Hill, the stocks were in this area, probably on the site of the new houses built in 2001 opposite the Post Office, we have now a Stocks Loke to remind us of the stocks we had in Cawston.

Workhouse:- A workhouse was built on the West side of Chapel Street, a convenient white brick building accommodating 70 paupers for Cawston and adjacent parishes, it was replaced before 1845 by tenements and let by the overseers to the poor parishioners.

Stained Glass Window:- In Norwich Cathedral there is a Memorial Stained Glass Window, (A Knight in Armour) for Lieutenant Cecil Cawston in the XV111 Hussars who was killed in the Boer War February 1901, he was the son of George Cawston of Cawston Manor. Local tradition says that, overcome by grief, his father had his son's personal belongings carried out and buried in the grounds in a spot known as Peggy's Garden, this area is now arable land, Peggy was the daughter of a Mr.Chetham.               Also see related history links-Village Hall

Wireless Set (Radio):- First appeared in 1919, a two-valve set with headphones costing £10.00 owned by Messrs D. and S. Oakes.

Pond-Pit:- Fishing was carried out in a small pond at the rear of the Abattoir which closed in 1961 now Broadland Winery for small roach, perch and carp, the pond had a small island in the middle which you could wade to. Also, nearby was a blood pit which received effluent from the abattoir via a filling pipe.

Wagons:- In about 1930 Wagons as in the photo below were supplied to HM the King made by Arthur William Bush agricultural implement agent and repairer, wheelright, coachbuilder, painter and cart and wagon builder of Chapel Street
.
