February 2008 meeting
What
Richard
Howard doesn't know
about the life
of George Formby isn't
worth
knowing, judging by the
illustrated
talk he gave to. everyone
gathered at
our
February
meeting,
in fact
he is cowriting
a book on the life
of George. Thanks goes to Richard
for a very interesting
and informative
evening.
In April
we are having
a talk
that will appeal especially
to the ladies
and that is Victorian Women's
and Men's Dress. It will
be an eye opener to see how fashions have changed
over the years and just
what
us poor ladies
have had to put up with over the centuries just to look
beautiful!!
Mark
the date on
your calendars, Thursday 24th April, 7 pm
start
and the normal entrance
charges will apply, 50p to members and £1.50
to non-members,
with refreshments
(I recommend
a lovely
cuppa
tea!)
included,
thanks
especialy
to Ivy, Patsy, Sandra
and Jenny.
At every
meeting
Des lays out on a table in the hall all the new memorabilia he
has gained over the month, please take the time to have a look
through the photos etc. it's amazing
just what is coming
to light.
If anyone
ever wants to browse through
the history collection in Cawston History Room at
the village hall do just contact
Des and he
will be only too pleased
to take you in there at a mutually agreed date and
time.
We
are
presentaly attempting to
gather as must information as we can about
all those on the 1st
and 2nd
World
War
Roll of Honour
in the church. If you could
provide photos, regiment and
rank information, DOB and DOD,
please pass them onto anyone of the committee; Des Cook, Terry Simons,
Theresa Carman, Eric Cullum, John Gilbert, Jeanne
Vince
or
Ivan Purdy, or bring them along to any meeting. Many thanks
indeed.
Our
last request is, has anyone got photos (with names if possible) of Cawston
sports teams of years gone by? With the rebirth of the Wanderers it would
be fantastic to be able to put together folders of teams including, of
course, our present football team.

March 2008 meeting
Our meeting in March was very well attended with the subject
being “The Home Front in the 1st and 2nd World
Wars”. Mrs Siliprandi gave a very interesting talk and certainly roused
folks’ memories.
OPEN DAY
As May is “Local History Month” we have decided to
hold an Open Day on Thursday 22nd May. The
Village Hall will be open for two
sessions, 2pm – 5pm and 7pm to 9pm. Entry will be free and refreshments
available.
At the two sessions we will have displays of many of
the photos, documents and memorabilia of Cawston’s History that we have
collected so far. We would truly welcome any more items that anyone
brings along on the day, not just old items but also anything right up to
date that will be history in a few years time.
Please come along and look at our fabulous collection, it has something to
interest everybody!!
CAWSTON'S
ROLE OF HONOUR
Previously in the magazine we have asked for help
with piecing together details of Cawston’s War Role of Honour and we are
very, very pleased to say that Mr Ron Beall contacted us and told us that
he had already researched the men on the Role of Honour and produced a
folder with most of the details which he has donated to Cawston’s History
Collection. We would like to thank Ron very much from everyone in Cawston!!

April 2008 Meeting
For our
April
meeting we
welcomed
a speaker from
the Norwich
Castle
Musuem
who
gave us a fascinating
insight
into
ladies
and
men's
wear
from 1800 to 1900.
Needles to
say men's
smart clothing,
at least
has hardly changed
although
no doubt most
modern
men
are pleased
that
leggings evolved
into trousers, can you
imagine!!
Ladies
must
be thankful
that the days of the bone
corsets and
bustles of every shape and size are
long gone; they
even put
children
in
them!
We
hope
you all came along to look at our collection
of
Cawston
History memorabilia so far on our Open Day on
22nd
May.

May 2008
Meeting
What a
fantastic turnout of folk we welcomed to our Open Day in May, including
two classes of very well behaved children from the Primary School.
We estimated that 200
people came through the doors over the two sessions and we hope everyone
found something interesting to read and see. Judging by the favourable
comments in the Visitors Book (which has now become part of Cawston's
History of course) we think they certainly did! Many thanks to all those
who attended and ail those who helped on the day either arranging the room
or helping with the refreshments!

June 2008 Meeting
For anyone who didn’t know the story of Kett’s
Rebellion, you certainly should now having attended our June meeting. We
enjoyed a very interesting and comprehensive talk by Susan Yaxley, telling
us of the background to the rebellion, what actually happened and the
consequences.
Susan is the founder member of the Larks Press at
Guist Bottom, Dereham so instead of charging us for her talk she asked us
to buy some books from the collection she brought along with her. This we
did and so, from July, all the books, including a small one on Kett’s
Rebellion and our current stock of books will be available for members of
the society to borrow for free and for a small charge for non-members. If
you want to buy books from the Press yourself just go to
www.booksatlarkspress.co.uk.
We are looking forward to our meeting on July 24th with a talk on Cawston
Church which will no doubt be fascinating.
We will NOT be holding a meeting in August because
of it being a holiday month but in September we will be welcoming along an
ex policeman who will present a talk about the History of the Police Force
and East Anglian murders. It will no doubt prove to be eye-opener!
So mark in your diaries, the fourth Thursday of
September, the 25th, 7 pm at Cawston Village Hall. 50p for
members and £1.50 for non-members with a cup of tea and a cake on the
house!
We look forward to seeing you there, thank you all
for your continued support and wish you a relaxing holiday season!
July 2008 Meeting
Peter Bradbury gave an excellent, detailed talk,
pointing out different details of our Church, St Agnes, which generally go
unnoticed, at our July Historical Society meeting. We were delighted with
the turn out for the talk with approx fifty five folk attending and there
was a positive and appreciative response from all. It was good to be
educated about one of Cawston’s own historical building by Peter as we
would never have noticed those refinements otherwise!
There will be NO MEETING in AUGUST but we will resume
on
Thursday 25th September at 7pm with a talk about the
history of the Police Force and East Anglian murders.
Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the
holiday season

August Report
2008
We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer
holidays. Unfortunately the weather hasn't been that kind to us but at
least we are not moaning because our lawns are dead or we have a hosepipe
ban! We can't have
it
all ways and the
fare from our gardens has been good, plenty of baking potatoes instead of
egg sized new potatoes!!, runner beans
by
the
bag
full,
leeks enough for an army and a very healthy looking crop of parsnips!
It was a pleasure for the Historical Society
to support the
highly
successful St.
Agnes
Flower Festival, something else to
add to the rich archives of our village!
Back to business
for the
Historical Society with out next meeting being on
Thursday 23rd
October and a talk on
"The
Real Edith Cavell"
by the very knowledgeable clearly
spoken Mrs. Barbara Miller, one we are all looking forward to! As always
the evening commences at 7 pm, with refreshments, al1 for the princely sum
of £1.50
if
you are not a
member or
50p if
you are. See you
there!

September Report 2008
Our September talk was delivered by ex-chief superintendent Morris Morson
who introduced us to some interesting historical murders committed in East
Anglia. One of those outlined was a particular gory murder where the body
parts were located scattered around various areas of Norwich. His
description of the various murders committed over past centuries was
fascinating, if a but gruesome.
Mr. Morson also gave an account of how police detection methods have
improved over the centuries from the most primitive detection methods,
through to the use of fingerprints and latterly to the sophisticated use
of DNA to identify the perpetrators of crimes. Mr. Morson's talk was both
interesting and informative.
Our future programme includes:
=
Thursday 27th November 2008 - Jeremy Goss of
Norwich City FC
December - Christmas break
Thursday 22nd
January
2009 - History of Cromer
Please come along at 7 pm for the hour long talk. Entrance, with free
refreshments is £1.50 for non-members and 50p for members of the

October Report 2008
Our
October talk
was
about the Real
Edith
Cavell and
proved both interesting
and informative. Barbara Miller,
who is no
stranger
to our Historical
Society, once again delivered
a splendid
oration.
This time
outlining
Edith Cavell's
life and her commitment to
nursing and her
patients.
Her life was
about care for the
sick
and
ill
and her
courageous decisions
to stay in Belguim after hostilities broke out in 1914 eventually
proved fatal
for her.
During the war she continued nursing British
soldiers and helping
them get back to alied lines and for this she
was convicted
and sentenced by the
Germans to be
shot
as a collaborator.
She demonstrated a true
commitment
of the
human spirit
to do what
is
right
in
circumstances
where
it
would have been
easier to
co-operate with the invaders
and hand over
allied
soldiers
to Germany.
After
the War her body was
returned to England.
King and country
wanted her funeral
to be held
at Westminster
Abbey. However being a
local woman, her family
insisted that she be
brought
home
to Norwich where she
was buried and remains
today
in the
cathedral
grounds.
Our future
programme
includes:-
Thursday 27th
November 2008 -
Jeremy
Goss on
Norwich
City.
December -
Christmas
break
Thursday
22nd Januarys 2009
-
History of
Cromer
Please come along for 7 pm for the talk.
Entrance is 50p members and £1.50
non-members.
This includes cakes and refreshments.
All welcome.
If you have any historical
items that may be of interest
to us and to Cawston folk in the future,

collate them.

November Report 2008
Jeremy Goss ex Norwich City football mid-fielder
entertained our November meeting with an interesting and amusing account
of his experiences as a young footballer trying to make it into the
professional ranks.
He demonstrated his commitment and passion for the game and illustrated
his dedication to becoming a professional footballer, plus the sacrifices
his family had made to enable him to get into football.
Because the game is hard he recalled the number of times when after a
football trial the manager would come up to a young aspiring player and
put his arm around the youngster's shoulders and tell them
softly “you will never make a footballer and that you are rubbish”
this, often brutal treatment, was the way in
which he had been treated after a trial with football clubs after about 10
minutes of football. The arm round the shoulder treatment was one of the
specialities of the hard but successful managers.
He also recalled some of his triumphs particularly the games he had played
in Europe and for his country – Wales. He particularly recalled the goal
that he had scored in the competition when playing for Norwich City. He
mentioned that he had played with such greats as Ian Rush and Ryan Giggs.
Overall Jeremy provided an interesting and piecing incite into the
beautiful game.
