| CWE was formed in 1962 by a German father and son who traced
their winemaking ancestry back to the 16th century in Germany. In about
1970 the businesses premises at Chapel Street was acquired which was
the former Abattoir, the company employed
about eighty staff with a few extra people as required, most of the staff
worked for the company a large number of years CWE was a dominant
brand within the homebrew industry and was sold in high street shops,
(Boots) chemists, wine making circles and exported, there was 46 different
types of grape concentrates produced, most of grape juices being imported
from Spain, Italy and Cyprus. The canning production foreman was
Mr John Gilbert. |
