Crime update for Rural Broadland 13/5/08

Theft of Heating oil and diesel
There have been 15 reported incidents of this crime in the Broadland area since the being of this year.
Domestic properties farms and commercial properties have been targeted.
Please look at your security.
Thieves will want to get their vehicle as near to the tank as possible. So by taking some crime prevention measures then you can stop yourself from becoming the next victim.
Ensure that your tank is in a position that access to it can be restricted i.e. locked gates.
Not hidden from view easily seen from other properties nearby.
Control switches should be located in a secure building and the electricity supply turned off when the tank is not in use.
Good security lighting.
A good quality locking device should be fitted to all fuel tanks such as a high quality shackle padlock.
A metal cage or fencing around the tank.
Drive way alarms are available from myself at Sprowston Police Station priced at £20
If you would like further information regarding Crime Prevention then please call Norfolk Constabulary and ask for the Crime Prevention Officer for your area.

Please always report incidents and anything suspicious immediately to Norfolk Police on 0845 456 4567, and where possible descriptions of person/s and index numbers of vehicles please.

Advice & Crime update 14th March 2008

GARAGES, SHEDS & GARDEN SECURITY
Spring is here Easter is just around the corner.
Now is the time when we venture outside so give some thought to the valuables you have in the garden, the shed and garage.
What security do you have in place?
Sheds if there is a window secure it also obscure it with a blind or net curtain.
It may not always be appropriate to fit a heavy-duty padlock hasp and staples as the shed door and frame may not be strong enough to support them. There is a range of smaller but sturdy padlocks, padbolts, hasps and staples that would be suitable. Always use coach-bolt fixings through the door frame.
A small shed alarm could also be fitted.
Garages
Wooden double leaf doors, again preferable to secure the doors with a heavy-duty hasp and staple, coach bolts through the doors, together with a closed shackle padlock.
Up and Over Garage doors
It is probably best not to rely solely on the centre lock provided. Fit a hasp and staple, together with a padlock. There are also mortice locks specially designed for garages doors that engage into the side frame.
Garden Security.
The most vulnerable part of the house is at the rear which is via an insecure garden
According to the 1996 British Crime survey some 60% of all domestic burglaries took place via the rear or side windows and doors, this is the national average.
Check on your fencing especially since the strong winds.
Install a gate with a secure lock; lock tools etc away in a secure shed or garage.
Items such as ladders chain to a secure structure with a strong padlock.
Borders can be planted with 'unfriendly' shrubs i.e. Pyracantha, Berberis, Hawthorn, Gorse, Holly, and Mahonia just to mention a few.
Install security lighting
Also don't forget to property mark al of your items.
At Newton St faiths Newton Close on the 8th March 2008 a rear garden was entered and entry gained to a shed. Approx £5000 of fishing tackle was stolen.
If you require any crime prevention advice then please contact Norfolk Police and ask for the crime Prevention Officer for your area.
Please always report incidents and anything suspicious immediately to Norfolk Police on 0845 456 4567, and where possible descriptions of person/s and index numbers of vehicles please.
Alternatively call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

Crime Update 16 January 2007

THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLES
 Since December 23rd 2006 to January 16th 2007
There have been 68 thefts from motor vehicles throughout Broadland
The Urban area 61 crimes were reported.
The areas most targeted have been Thorpe St Andrew, Taverham, Drayton, Hellesdon, Old Catton, and Sprowston.
Rural Lingwood, Acle Frettenham, Stratton Strawless, Coltishall, Salle
It appears that no area has escaped
Most of these crimes could have been avoided I am amazed reading the reports that vehicle owners are not taking necessary precautions. For example vehicles have been left unlocked valuables left on view sportsbags, laptops, handbags I could go on.
Please once again please make your neighbours aware.
Just because the vehicle is parked in their driveway their vehicle will not be targeted how untrue is this, it is no excuse to leave it insecure and valuable items left on view.
Don't leave items on view always remove them from the vehicle or lock them away in the boot.
