At 7.30 am on July 1st, 1916,
the Battle of the Somme began. The massive artillery
bombardment of the enemy lines suddenly lifted as a quarter
of a million men waited in their trenches for the signal to
attack.
One hour later, 30,000 men
had been killed or wounded. This had risen to 60,000 by the
end of the day, and five months later at the end of the
battle, one and a quarter million men were dead. It was the
greatest disaster in British military history. |
